If you want lots of brown eggs this is the bird for you! Production: You can expect 300+ large, brown eggs per hen. These birds are made for laying! Temperament: Most owners say that their Production Reds are no more and no less friendly or aggressive than any other breed of chicken. It seems to have much more to do with the individual chicken than the breed overall. History: Production Reds are Rhode Island Red Industrial Production strain. They are bred mainly to be very productive layers, but are heavy enough to be good meat birds, too. As Production Reds gained popularity, Rhode Island Reds suffered and by the 1950s, almost all of the Rhode Island Reds were gone. Now, thanks to the efforts of many who are committed to raising that important heritage breed Rhode Island Reds they are now a strong breed. Colors: Production Reds are, of course, red. (Harvested May 2nd. Both were over 6lbs each after only 8-9 weeks) This breed grows so fast many suffer from broken legs and many have heart attacks. These birds grow so fast that there is a period of time at about six weeks of age when their feathers are in, but not completely and they look half plucked. This breed has no real interest in eating bugs, they would rather just hang their head into the feeder all day. Harvest day came. And we ate one. It was the tastiest chicken of my life. So here's the upsides: Other breeds are generally harvested at about five months (21 weeks). These are generally harvested at about 8 to 9 weeks and when you harvest them, they are bigger. Half the time to care for them - that's right this makes for half the hassle, half the predator problems, half the weather problems, half of ... a lot of things. The feed to meat ratio is excellent.
